![]() Some blocks are the same while others are different. Think of the operating systems more like building blocks rather than wrappers. Mint also has a version based on Debian (LMDE) instead of being based on Ubuntu. For example, Ubuntu is using Wayland for graphics rendering while Mint uses X Server. While Mint is based on Ubuntu, it is not really a "wrapper" around Ubuntu. Those additional kernel options came from other Ubuntu releases such as Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) and Ubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute Hippo). Mint is also giving additional options for those with newer hardware. So when any distribution is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, does not necessarily mean it will follow the same kernel? Mint is following the same kernel as Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. But I thought I will make the concept clear since it seems to fit into the context. I understand probably the question is broader than the topic heading, and the the forum may not allow so much digression. people say Manjaro is based on Arch, but does it mean Manjaro can use a different kernel? So when any distribution is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, does not necessarily mean it will follow the same kernel?ĭoes it follow the same concept elsewhere? E.g. In fact, I was assuming something akin to a layered software architecture thinking of ubuntu as a wrapper around the kernel, and then mint as another thin wrapper around Ubuntu. So I assumed the Mint's kernel will stick to the focal fossa kernel until the next Ubuntu LTS release. My understanding is Ubuntu Focal fossa is based on kernel 5.4, and the Mint (Ulyana+) are based on Focal fossa. If you do not mind another follow up, can you clarify something? Many people are currently using the 5.11 kernel. When the 5.11 kernel reach its end-of-life, a newer supported version will become available. The webcam does a decent job with white balance and exposure, but details look fuzzy and blurred. ![]() It only receives bug fixes and patches.īecause there is so much new hardware available that did not have drivers for it in the 5.4 kernel, the Mint team has released additional ISOs with newer kernels so people will have success with Mint. The XPS 15’s webcam and speakers are both serviceable but nothing to write home about. While the 5.4 LTS kernel is currently receiving support, it is not receiving any new features (such as new drivers). Your hardware did not even exist at that time so there is no way the 5.4 kernel could properly support it. The 5.4 kernel first came out more than a year ago. Is there any compatibility mapping anywhere about kernel version, mint version and processor generation? The kernel can only include drivers for hardware that is available at the time the kernel is released.
